Microscopic theory of spin relaxation of a single Fe adatom coupled to substrate vibrations

چکیده
Understanding the spin-relaxation mechanism of single adatoms is an essential step towards creating atomic magnetic memory bits or even qubits. Here we present essentially parameter-free theory by combining \textit{ab-initio} electronic and vibrational properties with many-body nature states. Our calculations account for millisecond spin lifetime measured recently on Fe MgO/Ag(100) reproduce dependence number decoupling layers external field. We show how interaction environment should be tuned in order to enhance stability, propose a clear fingerprint experimentally detecting localized spin-phonon excitation.

We investigate the spin relaxation induced by acoustic phonons in the presence of spin-orbit interactions in single electron Si/SiGe lateral coupled quantum dots. The relaxation rates are computed numerically in single and double quantum dots, in in-plane and perpendicular magnetic fields. The deformation potential of acoustic phonons is taken into account for both transverse and longitudinal p...
متن کاملSpin-transfer torque on a single magnetic adatom.
We theoretically show how the spin orientation of a single magnetic adatom can be controlled by spin polarized electrons in a scanning tunneling microscope configuration. The underlying physical mechanism is spin assisted inelastic tunneling. By changing the direction of the applied current, the orientation of the magnetic adatom can be completely reversed on a time scale that ranges from a few...
متن کاملAbsence of a spin-signature from a single Ho adatom as probed by spin-sensitive tunneling
Whether rare-earth materials can be used as single-atom magnetic memory is an ongoing debate in recent literature. Here we show, by inelastic and spin-resolved scanning tunnelling-based methods, that we observe a strong magnetic signal and excitation from Fe atoms adsorbed on Pt(111), but see no signatures of magnetic excitation or spin-based telegraph noise for Ho atoms. Moreover, we observe t...
متن کاملSingle Adatom Adsorption and Diffusion on Fe Surfaces
Using Embedded-atom-method (EAM) potential, we have performed in detail molecular dynamics studies on a Fe adatom adsorption and diffusion dynamics on three low miller index surfaces, Fe (110), Fe (001), and Fe (111). Our results present that adatom adsorption energies and diffusion barriers on these surfaces have similar monotonic trend: adsorption energies, Ea(110) < Ea(001) < Ea(111), diffus...
